UNIT 4
Homeless to Homeowner
Thesis title :
Why ?
My project, starting from Unit 1, has been focussed primarily on housing inequality and homelessness. It all started with a walk around Redbridge where I could not help noticing the high rates of homelessness. It affected something within me, and what I saw stayed with me when I got home. How can there be such explicit displays of poverty and inequality in the capital of one of the most advanced nations in the world? The more I researched into homelessness in this country the more the scale of the problem revealed itself.
It was decided without my consent- my project was going to be looking into the issues of homelessness. I feel passionate about combatting inequality, and it appears that housing inequality is one of the biggest issues facing our nation today.
Research
Shown here is a collection of research booklets I've produced looking into the issues of homelessness.

Homeless Pod project
I designed and built 18 plywood CNC cut sleeping pods for the night shelter that I have been involved with.

My major project is a continuation of the themes embedded within the pod project :

This project is proposing an alternative approach for the local Redbridge Community Land Trust (CLT), involving:
-
The acquisition of council land for the existing CLT group at an affordable rate
-
A community engagement strategy to gain members and momentum for the group as well as an opportunity for co-design
-
Funding strategies
-
Modularly designed components that can be easily assembled on sites of various shapes and sizes.
